Possibly James`s most complex and difficult work, THE GOLDEN BOWL concerns four characters: the American art connoisseur Adam Verver, his daughter Maggie, Maggie`s old school friend Charlotte Stant, and Charlotte`s ex-suitor Prince Amerigo. The fabulously wealthy Ververs encounter the prince on their European tour, and he and Maggie fall in love and are married. When Charlotte comes to visit, Adam Verver asks her to marry him. The two couples settle in London, where Maggie begins to suspect the previous liaison between her husband and her friend. Desperately in love with the prince and unable to bear the presence of his old lover, Maggie persuades her father to take Charlotte back to America to live, without revealing to him what she knows. Impressed by Maggie`s handling of the delicate situation, the prince falls truly in love with her. A golden bowl found in a Bloomsbury antique shop, and later smashed to pieces, serves as the emblem for the complicated web of love and betrayal James deals with in this novel.

Synopsis: Published in 1904, The Golden Bowl is the last completed novel of Henry James. In it, the widowed American Adam Verver is in Europe with his daughter Maggie. They are rich, finely appreciative of European art and culture, and deeply attached to each other. Maggie has all the innocent charm of so many of Jamess young American heroines. She is engaged to Amerigo, an impoverished Italian prince; he must marry money, and as his name suggests, an American heiress is the perfect solution. The golden bowl, first seen in a London curio shop, is used emblematically throughout the novel. Not solid gold but gilded crystal, the perfect surface conceals a flaw; it is symbolic of the relationship between the main characters and of the world in which they move. Also in Europe is an old friend of Maggies, Charlotte Stant, a girl of great charm and independence, and Maggie is blindly ignorant of the fact that she and the prince are lovers. Maggie and Amerigo are married and have a son, but Maggie remains dependent. 13 Digit ISBN number: 9780192835420. 10 Digit ISBN: 0192835424.

With the marriage of the Italian Prince Amerigo to the American girl Maggie, daughter of millionaire Adam Verver, James presents a story of illicit love which is supposedly overcome with the reestablishment of the social order of marriage. After Maggie's marriage, her father marries his daughter's best friend. Behind James' diaphanous, sophisticated language, lurks adultery and the specter of incest.
